On Friday morning, April 4, 2025, 86 student-athletes from Cumberland University stepped off the field and into classrooms across the Lebanon Special School District to take part in our annual Reading Day. Representing a variety of Phoenix athletic teams, these college athletes visited five LSSD elementary schools to share the joy of reading with our students.
The athletes—easily recognized in their Cumberland gear—read aloud in classrooms, answered students’ questions, and sparked excitement about books and college. Byars Dowdy Elementary welcomed 18 athletes, 15 visited Jones Brummett Elementary, 18 went to Sam Houston Elementary, 18 to Castle Heights Elementary, and 17 to Coles Ferry Elementary.
We are incredibly grateful to Cumberland University and their student-athletes for investing time in our students and serving as outstanding role models. Their presence helped foster a love of reading and left a lasting impression on our young learners. Thank you for making Reading Day unforgettable!
