June 10 The Board approved construction bids for the new school.
April 12 The Board selected the name for our new school, along with its Mascot and colors. The school will be called Winfree Bryant Middle School after Mr. Cordell Winfree (former Director of Schools, principal, and teacher of LSSD) and Ms. Hattie Bryant (former teacher and first African American teacher in LSSD). The mascot is the Aviators (in honor of the airport and Air National Guard) and the colors are Columbia Blue, Silver, and White. This will keep the colors in the blue family so that "Go Big Blue" is the cry of the Aviators as it will be when they become Blue Devils at LHS. The emblem was submitted by WJB and it is a symbol of the Air Force with some modifications.

What happens to the other schools and school zones once construction is complete? Once construction of our new middle school is complete, we will convert Castle Heights Upper Elementary to an elementary school (PreK-5) and add fifth grade to our three existing elementary schools: Byars Dowdy Elementary, Coles Ferry Elementary, and Sam Houston Elementary. Walter J. Baird Middle School and the new middle school will house grades 6-8. Students attending Byars Dowdy Elementary and Castle Heights (Upper) Elementary will attend the new middle school. Students attending Coles Ferry Elementary and Sam Houston Elementary will attend Walter J. Baird Middle School.

As you know, these changes will require us to evaluate our current school zones and adjust them accordingly. There are many variables involved in this process and we will communicate those changes once they are finalized at a later date.
